Dark Ballet History

Fusing Music, Movement, and Storytelling
Dark Ballet was conceived in the South of England in 2013 as an experimental music project under the creative vision of Jeff Moore. Though the idea first took shape abroad, Dark Ballet is based just outside Albany, New York, where it continues to grow as a story-driven music and movement project.
The debut album, Master of XIS (2016), explored diverse genres and sounds. It was a period of experimentation and artistic searching as the project refined its voice.
The Turning Point
Between 2017 and 2023, Dark Ballet released new songs while honing its direction. Gothic textures, Southern hard-driving rock, blues influences, and heavier elements gradually shaped the bold, theatrical sound that defines the group today.
A defining moment came in December 2023.
Dark Ballet performed the instrumental piece Christmas Spirits alongside dancers from the School of the Albany Berkshire Ballet. The fusion of live hard rock and classical ballet was immediate and undeniable. That performance clarified the future. The music was not meant to stand alone. It was meant to move with bodies on stage.
From Songs to Stage Works
In early 2024, Jeff Moore composed Dark Ballet’s first full librettos, Spectres of Solstice and Queen of the Night, and shared them with Jason Ohlberg of Skidmore College.
The collaboration brought together ballet dancers, costume designers, media artists, and live musicians in a unified production. These performances marked a clear evolution. Dark Ballet was no longer simply a recording project or a live band. It had become a music-centered movement ensemble.
Dark Ballet Today
Dark Ballet creates original, story-driven works that merge hard rock with ballet, contemporary dance, aerial arts, and other movement disciplines. Under Jeff Moore’s artistic direction, alongside bassist and co-founder Crystal Dea Moore, each piece begins with a written narrative. Every composition is born from story, not from riff. The music is shaped with choreography in mind from its first note. Choreography develops in dialogue with the score.
What is a staged narrative powered by live music and embodied through movement.
Conceived in England. Built in upstate New York. Committed to the belief that when music and movement meet with storied intention, something larger takes shape.
